Reviews of "Dichotomies"
“...intimate, compelling free improv: equal parts hip jazz, avant adventure and...something completely different. Woven through tapestries of quiet and cacophony, the Velocity Duo is new music for a new generation.”
John Pietaro, Dissident Arts
“ These short, most likely at least halfimprovised vignettes transcend the question of whether or not this is jazz or indie classical or whatever mix of genres it might be: it’s just good, fun music.”
New York Music Daily
"One thing that distinguishes them from all the “other vocal duos” is that they don’t fall into the trap of improvising that sounds like chanting… that’s especially well evidenced on my personal favorite of the dozen tunes offered up, “Insecurity and Substance“… definitely jazzified and full of brimming life! I give the duo a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, especially for listeners who love a solid sonic adventure"

Bio (Long Form):
Lauren Lee is a forward-thinking vocalist, pianist, and composer based in New York City. A native of the St. Louis (MO) metropolitan area, her foray into creative music began as a teenager in the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, and experience that allowed her to explore the music of contemporary and avant garde composers while completing her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies (Vocal Performance) at Webster University.
She has found her voice (literally) as a vocalist of jazz and avant garde/lyrical abstract music, and also as a pianist and composer. The Velocity Duo, a project she co-leads with renowned bassist, Charley Sabatino, is a completely improvised electro-acoustic bass and voice duet project whose 2015 release “Dichotomies” has received airplay both in the US and abroad and afforded the duo touring opportunities in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the Czech Republic. Her “Space Jazz” trio, which focuses on her classical and singer-songwriter flavored jazz compositions, has toured throughout the northeastern US and Canada. The trio’s album, “The Consciousness Test”, was released in Spring 2016 as their full-length debut after releasing a 4-track EP, “Makebeliever” in 2014. She will enjoy a lengthy European stint this fall at the Stockholm Jazz Festival and the UNCOOL Festival in Poschiavo, Switzerland.
Lee performs regularly with her ensembles as well as a guest with groups like The Hot Shim Sham Orchestra, the Eco-Music Big Band, and Arc Welding. She has performed at such noted venues in NYC as The Iridium, Highline Ballroom, The Cell, Zinc Bar, ABC No Rio, and Downtown Music Gallery.
